SUPERMAN: SON OF KAL-EL #1 - Jon Kent Steps Up

This story was written by Tom Taylor, with the visual talents of John Timms and Gabe Eltaeb. Just over a month after the ending of the main Superman title, something that rarely happens, here we have it’s replacement featuring Jon Kent in the title role. The final arc and a bit from Philip Kennedy Johnson really wasn’t all that great to be honest, and I will get into his Action Comics run later this week, so I feel that shake up of the Superman status quo was definitely necessary, no matter what some so-called “purists” would have you believe. The one thing that is a little bit weird to me with this book is that, while it would have seemed like it was being done to reduce the number of Clark Kent focused books, that isn’t the case, as Superman and the Authority has filled the void. For the most part, I most certainly got a great deal of enjoyment out of the this first issue. While not much exactly went on in terms of actual story in the modern day setting, I quite appreciated ...

SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW #1

This story is written by: Tom King, with visuals from: Bilquis Evely and Matheus Lopes. After being burned by the latter portion of his Batman run and the cluster that was Heroes in Crisis, I have pretty much made a point of avoiding everything to do with Tom King, no matter how much acclaim any one series seems to be getting at the time. I just could not bring myself to go through any potential disappointment from him once again, in much the same way that I have struggled with certain Joshua Williamson works, and even Hickman’s X-Men run. However, I simply just could not pass up the opportunity to pick up this title, to see what King could do with the iconic Supergirl character, with hopes that it would be more Vision than Batman, and the fact that it is only an eight issue series doesn’t hurt too much either to be honest. Although I am often quick to criticise any series following the first issue, I am here to hesitantly say that this was a very solid start, restoring a litt...

THE FLASH #768 - Wally West Is On His Way Back

This story was written by Jeremy Adams, with artwork from Darko Lafuente, Brandon Peterson, and Marco Santucci.   Since the beginning of the DC Rebirth initiative back in mid-2016, perhaps even for the five years prior to that with the New 52 as well, Wally West has been put through the absolute ringer. Whether that be just not appearing for half a decade with no explanation, being brought back and ignored, or going through a complete character assassination at the hands of Tom King, I would say that it is universally accepted that the handling of his character since his return has been less than satisfactory. To many, Wally West is their favourite Flash, having grown up with him post-Crisis, and reading his adventures for 25 years as the Fastest Man Alive, coming to love him and his supporting cast like they were close friends, who’s lives you were deeply invested in. Personally, Barry Allen is still my favourite Flash, purely because I wasn’t a big comic guy during Wally’...

THE JOKER #1 - A Complete Surprise

This issue was written by James Tynion IV, with artwork from Guillem March   When I first saw the slate of titles that DC were going to be releases as part of this “Infinite Frontier” era of storytelling, I will admit that I was very sceptical about the idea of a Joker solo title, as I was not sure that this would be tailored towards such a character, what with him being one of the biggest bads in all of DC Comics, and I thought that his adventures separate from Batman or some other hero would be pointless and unappealing. Of course, that was all working on the idea that the Clown Prince of Crime would be the sole focus of the entire narrative, for however long this series goes on for. Having not really read much information about the story, only really having seen the cover and pretty much decided there and then that this would be a disaster, I was unaware of the direction that James Tynion IV would be taking for this newest endeavour, being pleasantly surprised to say ...
