This Weeks Comic Book Preview

This week in the world of comics is looking to be a good one. At least for Marvel and DC.

From Marvel this week, we have the Secret Empire #2 from Nick Spencer, along with the various tie-ins to go with that, such as U.S.Avengers #6, and Ultimates² #7, written by Al Ewing. Also released this week, we have the first issue of the new Luke Cage solo series, written by David F. Walker, I'm interested to see how this does, as Luke Cage hasn't worked in a solo series in the past. And finally of note, we have Invincible Iron Man #7 from Brian Michael Bendis.



And from DC this week, we have the conclusion of The Button storyline, in Flash #22, along with the release of Batman #23, Aquaman #23 and Green Arrow #23. We also have some light-hearted fun in the form of one of my personal favourites, Harley Quinn #20.

Elsewhere in the comic book world, particular highlights for me include: Spawn's 25th Anniversary issue from  Image Comics. From Valiant Comics we have Ninjak #25, which I have just started to read recently, along with Spawn, as I am trying to break away from just reading the titles from the Big 2.

Review of Astonishing X-Men #1 - The Return of a Favourite (19/07/2017)

The cover The final 'new' X-book has finally been released, and it was alright. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the book itself, written by Charles Soule, I have to admit that I did spend the majority of my reading time pondering whether this is set before or after the Secret Empire event that is currently taking place across most of the other Marvel books. The first issue revolves around attacks on various psychics and telepaths, leading to Psylocke being attacked, and hell being reigned upon the city of London. This prompts a new group of mutants to jump into action and save her; Gambit, Fantomex (just why though?),  Bishop, Angel/Archangel, Beast, Rogue, and Logan. SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW #1

  This story is written by: Tom King, with visuals from: Bilquis Evely and Matheus Lopes. After being burned by the latter portion of his Batman run and the cluster that was Heroes in Crisis, I have pretty much made a point of avoiding everything to do with Tom King, no matter how much acclaim any one series seems to be getting at the time. I just could not bring myself to go through any potential disappointment from him once again, in much the same way that I have struggled with certain Joshua Williamson works, and even Hickman’s X-Men run. However, I simply just could not pass up the opportunity to pick up this title, to see what King could do with the iconic Supergirl character, with hopes that it would be more Vision than Batman, and the fact that it is only an eight issue series doesn’t hurt too much either to be honest. FANTASTIC FOUR: LIFE STORY #1

  This story is written by: Mark Russell, with visuals from: Sean Izaakse and Nolan Woodard.   One of the most difficult things to do for anything in media is to reuse a concept that has proven incredibly popular in the past, and make it as good as it was the first time around. We have seen it for years with movie reboots or television revivals, where you simply just do not get that same magic the second (or third and fourth) time around, with it then coming across as a shameless cash grab made by people who don’t care, or an embarrassment to the legacy of the original (hello Fantastic Four 2015). Of course, this is not just limited to film and television, as our beloved comic books have been guilty of more than their fair share of this over the years.
